UMO Baseball Wins Battle Of The Trojans 13-4 Over Virginia State

The 3rd-ranked University of Mount Olive took a 13-4 win over Virginia State University in non-conference baseball on Tuesday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

Mount Olive came out to take the lead in the first inning as Jose Lopez singled home Zach Mozingo for the first run of the game. Virginia State tied the game in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly. UMO then jumped out to a 4-1 advantage on RBI base hits by Lopez and David Mayo in the bottom of the third. VSU however, again had an answer as the visiting Trojans tied the game on a three-run home run in the top of the fourth. The home Trojans picked up a home run of their own with a two-run shot off the bat of Drew Ellis to cap off a three-run bottom of the fifth to give UMO a 7-4 cushion. Mount Olive continued to expand its lead with a four-run bottom of the sixth, that featured Trae Sweeting stealing home, and a two-run bottom of the seventh as UMO jumped out to a 13-4 lead. Drew Ellis came in from first to pitch the final three outs of the game to seal the win for Mount Olive.

Mount Olive will host North Greenville University at Scarborough Field in a three-game Conference Carolinas series matchup this weekend. First pitch for Friday’s single nine-inning game is set for 6 p.m.
