The Top-ranked University of Mount Olive defeated Francis Marion University 7-0 in non-conference baseball on Tuesday afternoon in Mount Olive.
Mount Olive took control of the game early on in the bottom of the first with two away. Drew Ellis worked out a 10 pitch walk to keep the inning alive and Jose Lopez followed suit by drawing a walk as well. Zach Mozingo put UMO on the board as he lifted a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall and the Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead. UMO retired FMU in order in the second and third and added a run in the bottom of the third off a Drew Ellis sacrifice fly to right as Ricky Surum scored to give the Trojans a four-run lead. The sixth inning saw the Trojans push home three more runs including Drew Ellis’ 11th home run of the season and Mount Olive led 7-0. The Patriots did get two runners on in the top of the ninth, but UMO held Francis Marion scoreless and took the 7-0 win.
Mount Olive will hit the road for a three-game series with Belmont Abbey starting Friday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
