Picking Yellow Squash (PHOTO GALLERY)

Temperature in the upper 80’s didn’t stop produce farm Tony Best from hitting his field of yellow squash Thursday afternoon in the Smith Chapel Community in western Wayne County. Tony and his father, Kenneth Best, have been growing yellow squash for years on the same location there by his father’s home. The home made tractor pull picker moved slowly through the field while pickers selected the right size squash and put them in a large tub of water to be washed before being packed into boxes that were later loaded onto a truck and taken to the market for sale. Tony said he picked anywhere from 150 to 175 half bushels of squash a day.
