Garbage Truck Overturns On Nahunta Road (PHOTO GALLERY)

Shortly after lunch Tuesday, firefighters from Pikeville/Pleasant Grove and Wayne County EMS Station 7 were dispatched to the scene of an overturned garbage truck on Nahunta Road near Pikeville Princeton Road. As firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the trash truck laying on the passenger side in the roadway. Both the driver and passenger were out of the vehicle and were not injured. Pikeville firefighters set up traffic control on both sides of the accident. Both the driver and passenger were checked out on the scene by Wayne County EMS, and were not taken to the hospital. The driver, Justin Merrill of Snow Hill, was apparently heading north on Nahunta Road with his co-worker, John Pridgen, when they rounded a curve and ran off the road on the right hand side into a ditch.  The truck then over-corrected, came back across the center line, and flipped over onto its side facing south on Nahunta Road. The North Carolina Highway Patrol has charged the driver, Justin Merrill, with failure to maintain lane control. The truck is owned by Carolina Waste Management of Snow Hill.
