Red Cross Urgently Seeks Blood Donations

The American Red Cross is in need of blood. It’s fairly typical to see a shortage in the nation’s blood supplies during this time of year, according to Maya Franklin with the American Red Cross.

The City of Goldsboro and Wayne County employees just had to cancel a competitive blood drive scheduled for Thursday this week. Franklin says that’s been the case across the state this winter, with North Carolina missing out on about 600 usual blood donations due mainly to severe winter weather.

Franklin says the Red Cross needs donors to roll up their sleeves, and each blood donation can save up to three lives.  Franklin says donating blood is a four step process, and the donation usually takes 5-10 minutes.

The American Red Cross is the primary provider of blood products for Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro and Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Members of the public can find opportunities to give blood by visiting redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
