Local Photographer Wins Paramount Theatre Art Contest

In partnership with the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of the Paramount Theatre, an art contest was held at the Arts Council of Wayne County. In January artists were invited to create pieces involving a Paramount theme. There were no restrictions on size or medium; artists were encouraged to express their creativity while honoring the theatre. Amateurs and professionals were included in the competition.

The Juror for the contest was Robin Vereen, from the Allegany Arts Council in western Maryland. Vereen is a life-long artist and patron of the arts. She has been with the Allegany Arts Council for more than a decade and previously served as the Gallery Director at the C. William Gilchrist Art Museum.

Vereen awarded the top prize to David Cain’s photograph of the Paramount’s exterior for its exquisite composition. Second place was awarded to Karin Thompson for her acrylic on canvas of theatre patrons enjoying a performance at the venue. “The artist truly captured their love of the theatre in this piece.” Said Vereen. Third prize was awarded to Mystery Masterpiece Artist, Madison Tallavida. The arts council encouraged artists to use the Paramount as their muse for this year’s Mystery Masterpiece entries. Tallavida painted an abstract watercolor for the event; Vereen was impressed with the detail and scope of Paramount events that were included in the 8 inch painting.

The winning pieces, as well as a selection of the themed Mystery Masterpiece entries will be on display at the Paramount Theatre during the Anniversary celebration. Sherry Archibald, Director of the Paramount Theatre and Goldsboro Event Center stated, “It’s been a privilege to partner with the Arts Council of Wayne County throughout the years and was fitting to recognize the theatre through visual arts at the annual Mystery Masterpiece fundraiser.” Arts Council of Wayne County’s Executive Director, Wendy Snow walker added, “We value our partnership with the Paramount and are excited to share so many of the Paramount themed pieces with the public throughout this celebration.”

The Paramount Theatre’s Tenth Anniversary Gala will be held at the venue on Friday, February 16th. Tickets are available ONLINE or by calling the Box Office at 919-583-8432.
