Former Town Clerk Charged With Embezzlement

The former Town Clerk for a Wayne County community is accused of embezzlement. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has charged 46-year-old Martha Jones with one count of Embezzlement, and her first court appearance was Monday. The SBI initiated the investigation in September last year and found Jones had allegedly embezzled $5,000 from the Fremont Town Hall during her time as Town Clerk. She was held at the Wayne County Detention Center on a $1,000 secured bond. According to the Fremont Town Board meeting minutes, Jones was replaced as Town Clerk in August of 2017.
