State Unveils HOPE Act

(NORTH CAROLINA NEWS NETWORK) — State lawmakers are offering additional ideas to combat opioid drug abuse.

At a General Assembly press conference this week, legislators unveiled the HOPE Act, the Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Enforcement Act, to strengthen law enforcement efforts to confront the opioid crisis.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein says the idea is to reduce the flow of legal drugs into the illegal drug trade.

The legislation will increase penalties for health care workers who steal drugs, bolster law enforcement efforts, and provide additional funding for the drug which can reverse overdoses.
