Summer Learning Day Marked Across Wayne County (PHOTOS)

Keep kids learning during the summer months and avoid the dreaded “Summer Slide.”

Summer Learning Day was marked on Thursday, July 12, across Wayne County as part of a growing initiative to keep children engaged in their education during the warm weather break from school.

Jane Gable is the Project Manager for READ Wayne, an early literacy advocacy group. She says parents can help their kids avoid the “Summer Slide.”

As part of the summer learning effort, Gable says READ Wayne has placed book boxes in several businesses across Wayne County.

Thursday’s Summer Learning Day activities in Wayne County included reading activities at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County, Summer Reading Camps at Wayne County Public Schools, and Bingo for Books at Carver Elementary School.

Below are some examples of how you, as a parent, caregiver, volunteer, or just community member could help:

  • Check out your local libraries, they have more than books! Programming and support are available year-round, but especially during the summer months. Take your child, take a friend’s child, take a youth group to one of the library’s many events – you will not be disappointed.
  • Keep a summer journal. Talk with your children about what they hope to do this summer, and in the year to come. Encourage them to write about these things, and spend time sharing your journal with them.
  • Look around your house, and, use your imagination! Is that a dishwasher? No, that is a portal to a land of mystery and excitement. Is that a broom? No, that is a charming form of transportation! Are those apples? No, those are the keys to long-life, and they are hiding at the end of a scavenger hurt!
  • How about the grocery store? This is really a place where colors, words, and numbers come to life! Just imagine how many of dozens of items your will buy, and thousands of items you will leave on the shelves that could be simple objects of learning.

United Way of Wayne County, READ Wayne, Wayne County Public Libraries, the Partnership for Children of Wayne County, Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County, and various child care facilities collaborated for Thursday’s Summer Learning Day activities.

The City of Goldsboro, Wayne County, and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper had declared July 12th, 2018 as Summer Learning Day.
