KPD: Tax Scam Returns

It’s not even tax time, but the Kinston Police Department warns the IRS scam is back. In a Facebook post, the Kinston P.D. says the scammers make unsolicited calls claiming to be the IRS.  They demand the victim pay a bogus tax bill by sending money usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer.

Remember, the IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment
  • Demand you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question/appeal the amount they say you owe
  • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
  • Threaten to bring in local law enforcement to have you arrested for no paying.
