Person Dies During Tree-Trimming Accident

Just before 11:30 AM Tuesday, the Wayne County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a person was hurt and trapped in a tree on the 1200 block of Emmaus Church Road in Dudley. EMS, the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department and Arrington Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival of first responders and firefighters, it was discovered that an individual had climbed a ladder into the upper area of the tree. The individual had left the ladder and climbed into the canopy area of the large tree and apparently was standing on tree branches. According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the individual was in the process of cutting a large limb within the top of the tree while other workers were on the ground. The limb that the individual was cutting suddenly snapped or twisted off and fell within the tree striking the victim. The victim fell into an area of two branches were he remained. EMS and firefighters tried to treat and remove the victim from the tree, but the victim, 49-year-old Jose Ruiz of Warsaw, succumbed to his injuries before he could be removed from the tree.

So very sad. Someone trying to make a living. But safety should always come first and this didn’t sound safe at all. Prayers to the family and co-worker that witnessed this.
