He is a Vet of the USAF. His name is Bill. The “fairly new Jeep” belongs to someone else who lets him use it sporadically. He has been down on his luck (so to speak) for some time and has a story that is similar to many others. He’s good guy and has done some odd job work for me in the past and was clean (not drunk/high) and did a good job. I help him (and other panhandlers) out quite a bit. I will admit that some are scammers…but when you take some time to talk to them and hear their stories usually the scammers are really easy to pick out over those that are genuinely at rock bottom and need help. Not to say I’ve never been fooled or taken advantage of…but I would rather err on the side of helping someone who ‘is a scammer that didn’t really need it’ versus not helping someone because I pre-judged them.

    However, to each/ their own.

Bill may very well be legit. However, most in Goldsboro are not.

Glad you help those in need. But when I drive around town and see panhandlers asking for money and help wanted signs on places of businesses I tend to see the panhandling as a scam. Being down on your luck belongs in a casino. Self help goes along way when there is opportunity around the corner. Just takes some initiative.

Just a comment. Saw a panhandler at Lowe’s today with sign saying hungry vet. After I drove past him he folded his sign and walked to the parking lot behind autozone and drove off in a fairly new Jeep. Scammer and he should be ashamed for pretending he is a vet.
