Wayne County Announces Additional Shelters

Wayne County Emergency Shelter Director Tammy Schrenker has announced additional shelters have opened ahead of approaching Hurricane Florence:

  • Mount Olive Middle School, 309 Wooten Street, Mount Olive
  • Spring Creek Middle School, 3579 NC 111, Seven Springs.

At this time, cots are not available at either location. Individuals should bring any of the following – blankets, pillows, blow-up mattresses, cots – and must bring personal hygiene items, medication, as well as special needs items for infants, children, and the elderly. A detailed list of items is listed below.

The other emergency shelters in Wayne County are

  • Wayne Academy at 801 N Lionel St in Goldsboro
  • Spring Creek High School at 4340 Indian Springs Road in Seven Springs
  • Tommy’s Road Elementary School at 1150 Tommy’s Road in Goldsboro

As of this release, the shelter at Carver Elementary School, 400 Old Seven Springs Road, Mount Olive is full and can no longer accept those seeking shelter. Individuals are urged to share this information on their social media pages.

Wayne County Emergency Shelter Packing List

Please review the list of suggested items if you need to evacuate to a public shelter.

General Items:

  • A change of clothing for 2-3 days, rain gear and sturdy shoes
  • Toiletries and personal items
  • Toothbrush/Toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Brush/Comb
  • Feminine Products
  • Glasses/Contacts
  • Hearing Aids/Dentures/Dental Adhesive/Retainers (Continued below)
  • Any special dietary needs and non-perishable foods for snacks
  • Blankets or sleeping bags and pillows
  • Identification and any important papers
  • Inexpensive personal and family entertainment items
  • Reading Material
  • Board Games, Cards, or battery operated games or devices with extra batteries
  • Flashlights with spare batteries
  • Non-perishable foods and snacks

Infants and Toddlers

  • Formula/Water/Milk/Juices
  • Baby Food/Snacks/Treats/Disposable Spoons
  • Coolers with icepacks or ice to keep any necessary supplies cool
  • Diapers/Wipes
  • Blankets

Medical Supplies & Equipment

If you use any special medical equipment such as an oxygen machine, nebulizer, glucometer, etc. please bring them with you in addition to any of the following:

  • Prescription medications or over-the-counter medications you normally take for up to 72 hours
  • Please note: ALL medications must be labeled
  • A written list of all medications
  • Oxygen and oxygen supplies (electric oxygen concentrator with extension cord, tubes, masks)
  • Mobility Equipment (Wheelchair/Walker/Cane or other special equipment)
  • Diabetic equipment (insulin, glucose meter/strips/lancets)
  • Cooler with icepack if needed to keep medications cool
  • Nebulizer and supplies
  • Batteries and/or chargers for electric wheelchair

Residents who require assistance at home with personal care, feeding, wound care; or who are bed bound, are requested to have their caregiver accompany them to continue providing this care.
