Wayne County Schools To Close Thursday; 3-Hour Delay Friday

In preparation for Hurricane Michael, the Wayne County Public Schools administration is closely monitoring storm forecast models and will be staying in close communication with emergency management officials between now and the passing of the storm. At this time, tropical force winds and heavy rains are forecast to impact Wayne County, with conditions expected to worsen throughout the day on Thursday. Keeping in mind that conditions are expected to become increasingly unsafe for transportation and travel as the storm passes through our area, the following decisions have been made related to school operations:

• All schools will be CLOSED for students and staff on Thursday, October 11.
• The WCPS Title I Parent Seminar scheduled for this Thursday will be postponed until a later date.
• On Friday, October 12, all schools will operate on a 3-HOUR DELAY for students and staff.

The district administration will closely monitor this storm, its timing, and its impacts to our area to determine if any further decisions need to be made about school operations on Friday.

“At this time, we are planning to have designated support staff evaluating the conditions of each campus first thing Friday morning,” states Dr. Michael Dunsmore, WCPS superintendent. “My administrative team will also be assessing roadways and weather conditions. While it is our hope that conditions will be conducive for holding school on Friday, families and staff need to be mindful that additional decisions about school operations for Friday may be made that morning.”

WCPS encourages families and staff to monitor local media,, or @WayneCountyPS on Facebook or Twitter, for the most current district announcements.
