Investigation Into Shooting At Old Cherry Hospital Campus

An employee at Cherry Hospital is injured in an accidental shooting. According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, the employee sustained the accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday afternoon after his shift was complete.  The incident occurred in the parking lot of the old campus at Cherry Hospital where there are no patients.  The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services says policy does not allow weapons on hospital property, and an investigation is ongoing.

The administrative code rule, 10A NCAC 28I .0402 states that each facility will develop and implement written policies concerning firearms. The rule requires the policy to include a statement that only a law enforcement officer may bring a firearm onto the grounds of the facility. Cherry Hospital’s policy is consistent with this rule and prohibits staff from bringing weapons on campus. Violation of this policy is not a criminal offense, but it is a human resources matter.
