Eastern Wayne Wins “Elementary Battle Of The Books”

For the third year in a row, Eastern Wayne Elementary students successfully put their reading skills to the test by winning the Wayne County Public Schools annual Elementary Battle of the Books competition. The competition took place on Friday, March 15, at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center with approximately 100 students from 13 schools competing.

The Elementary School Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl style competition that encourages reading. Contestants, who are in grades 4-5, must read 18 books chosen by a statewide committee, and the competition tests students’ comprehension of the books.

Eastern Wayne will move on to the Regional Elementary Battle of the Books competition, which will be held on May 2 at Temple Baptist Church, located at 1500 Kingdom Way in New Bern.

This year, WCPS will host the regional middle school competition. The competition will be held on April 12 at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center, located at 801 Poplar Street in Goldsboro, and will begin at 9:00 AM.

The Eastern Wayne Elementary Battle of the Books Team consists of Daniel Connolly, Yaritza Delgado, Lauren Narron, Carolyn Page, Ja’Naya Robinson, Onnalee Smith, and Tamia Sykes. The team is coached by Christie Davis and Sarah Robinson.
