Norwayne Middle Takes Second At Regional “Battle Of The Books”

Norwayne Middle students recently took second place at the Region 2 Middle School Battle of the Books competition. The team qualified for the Region 2 Competition after winning the WCPS Middle School Battle of the Books Competition in March. The regional competition, hosted for the first time by WCPS media coordinators, was held at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center in Goldsboro this past Friday.

“I congratulate all of the teams for their hard work and success in making it to the regional competition, and to Norwayne Middle for placing in the top two,” states Tamara Berman-Ishee, WCPS Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction. “The ability of these students to remember minute details from twenty-seven books while under pressure of the competition is impressive. They are all excellent representatives of their schools and their media center programs.”

Sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association, Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl type competition, specifically designed for students in grades 6 through 8. The Norwayne Middle Battle of the Books team competed against ten other middle school teams in Region 2 that also won their district-level competitions. Myrtle Grove Middle, located in New Hanover County, took the regional title.

“I would be remiss if I did not thank our district’s media coordinators and the district-level staff who helped organize the regional competition, and for making it a successful event for everyone in attendance,” adds Mrs. Berman-Ishee.

The Norwayne Middle 2018-2019 Battle of the Books Team consists of Halemh Hadwan, Atalia Carmichael, Cassidy Grimes,  Kyley Bowles, Mir Quddus, Evan Anderson, Brenna Bass, Alex Heath, Haley Short, Nathaniel Riso, and Jack Foery. The team was coached by Rhonda Nichols.

The Battle of the Books program is coordinated by the Media Center program at participating schools.
