American Legion Opens Baseball Season

Wayne County American Legion Post 11 opened the 2019 season in strong fashion with four victories over the weekend.

Post 11 defeated Wallace 9-4 on Friday night thanks to a three-run home run from Christian Yarbrough, and four strong innings on the mound from Tyler Thompson.

Wayne County swept a doubleheader from Farmville on Saturday, picking up victories by the score of 11-10, and 15-5. Clay Matthews provided five hits and six stolen bases in the opener. Sam Rice and Drew Spencer each contributed home runs.

In game two, Noah Overton recorded 12 strikeouts in four innings on the mound. Yarbrough supplied a pair of hits, including a home run.

Post 11 finished the weekend with a 16-5 win at Wake Forest. Jonathan Peacock and Braeden Collins each turned in strong performances on the mound. Blake Dilda and Blake Gipson both had two hits.

Wayne County (4-0) entertains Wake Forest at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Goldsboro High School.
