NAACP To Investigate Council’s Actions Against Williams

The local NAACP is unhappy with the treatment of a Goldsboro City Council member.

Monday, the Goldsboro Wayne Branch of the NAACP announced its intent to launch an investigation into the council’s attempt to censure and oust Councilman Antonio Williams.

Sylvia Barnes, the President of the Goldsboro Wayne NAACP, says the organization will watch to ensure the efforts against Williams aren’t racially-based or in violation of his civil rights.

Larcene Taylor, an NAACP member and District 1 resident, says she didn’t want to lose her voice on the council.

The NAACP says the actions by the council are an attack on Williams’ rights and the rights of the citizens that elected Williams as their representation.

I agree with you. Just to clarify, the Chairman didn’t get removed. He stepped down. I personally heard the entire recording from that meeting. The lady he yelled at spent the entire meeting accusing the Chairman of being a corrupt racist. Finally he lost it and yelled at her. Can’t say I blame him.

Little ol lady hey!!!!!. I’m good . naacp is ok with me I just wish they do things where it counts so it makes a difference. That’s all. It causes issues in some areas like myrtle beach south Carolina bike fest. We was refuse to be served in some areas due to naacp complaining they did towards blacks. Can’t make nobody serve you if not welcome .Somethings best left alone.

  3. Here’s a question for Ms. Larcene Taylor,
You mentioned that you “did not want to lose your voice on the council”.
What specifically has Mr. Williams done for you (us) as residents of District 1 that none of the other council members have? Perhaps it was when he tried to get the City Summer Youth Program to pay for the young people to work in his business (it’s called “conflict of interest” and is a no-no). I, for one, was offended when he failed to divulge his residency because he was “fearful” of the people (his constituents) knowing where he lived. His long record of causing trouble on the council benefits no one, black or white. I’m sure that we can find another qualified candidate from our district who will work to represent us, all of us, and not continuously sideline the city council’s business with the discord that this man has.

OK Blah…. I’m going to respond to your remark about the Herman Park Center here because I can’t stand the way multiple responses tend to be formatted into long, thin columns that are so difficult to read, 3 words at a time.
How much did you complain when the city spent big bucks on the new W.A. Foster Center, a facility that was built in a black community and is used almost 100% only by the black community? The old center was to be demolished but then, due to a demand to preserve it’s black heritage, the city turned around & spent hundreds of thousands of dollars more to repair and preserve it. The Herman Park Center is a facility for all people even though, the times that I’ve been there, I would have to say that the folks using the facility are predominately of the black race. So please, tell us what your problem is with the HPC? As for the poverty, education is a major weapon in fighting poverty…get an education, speak and communicate like you have some sense and learn a skill. The poverty that you keep harping on is largely due to one’s lack of initiative. Welfare and food stamps (EBT) were established to help people until they could get on their feet and support themselves but generations of people now use it as a way of life. Everyone thinks that they deserve a fancy desk job with the big bucks and all the perks but they don’t want to have to put the effort into doing what it takes to earn such a position. Education, skill and initiative=success.

Mr. Williams is in a position to be a great role model or mentor for young black boys and men. He could prove to them that, no matter their background, they can achieve success. He should be setting any example and not teaching them how to make excuses for inappropriate behavior.

I will say that the NAACP does not come out unless it suits their needs and gives them publicity. They are doing this for one reason only – to gain attention because he is a councilman. These are two people of the same race but of different influences and they have chosen the one that will pull strings for them. End of story. They do not ever come to the aid of someone that truly needs it anymore…that is the sad truth of the matter.

Goldsboro NAACP President Sylvia Barnes has now “twice” targeted meaningless positions for what perceived as “showboating” for press coverage News bites; and far from the historical purpose of the NAACP Civil Rights movement from the legacy ongoing 1950’s 60’s struggles of Blacks. I was quite upset when Barnes “targeted” the Police Chief West for his hilarious harmless spoof, with the Chief his general public he has humor as well as the high-law enforcement officer. Barnes need to get out of the offices air conditioning set into the courts, and\or the streets among our young men\women and recognize whats has “smack me in the face” with issues here in Goldsboro and across our nation an onslaught breakup of families, massive incarceration on MEN. Social, economic control.

So the fact that Simpson-Carter went to court and was denied what she was looking for based on the fact that it wasnt credible…. Now it’s so called still ok for his fellow ELECTED councilmen to try to censor him…… Last i checked he was elected…. and when an employee that wasn’t elected is stirring the pot and didn’t succeed, looks like she needs to find another job until he’s gone. PERIOD…

The bigger problem which all seem to ignore just like 5 of the councilmen that our mayor has been proven guilty of errors (multiple) throughout the years of his service and noone see’s that to be FISHY….

DOUBLE STANDARD IS WHAT THE NAACP IS LOOKING INTO…

Antonio Williams has never understood that he was elected as a city council member, not the emperor and if he wants the city council to vote in favor of the items on his agenda, he needs to be able to influence others. He hasn’t been able to do that so far and instead of looking within, he chooses to blame all the others. And the mayor has not been proven guilty of anything. He did not deny the oversites and he has corrected them…without whining and blaming others. Not everyone agrees with his ideas and plans but I guaranty nobody else has a better plan or cares more for all of the people of Goldsboro and Wayne County.

This article/investigation is about Antonio Williams though. He’s not concerned about Goldsboro or the citizens of his district. He’s there for himself. Nothing more.

So blablahblah, you do realize this is about censuring him not censoring him. In another comment you questioned someones education and that is a laugh. I do not believe you know the difference between censor and censure. If they were to censor him that means they would somehow block his speach. If they were tl censure him that means they condemn his actions and distance the rest of the council from the actions of one member. By the way you write I will assume you did not know that and the local naacp probably doesnt either.

The Goldsboro chapter of the NAACP has had the city administrators on their hit list ever since they refused to fire the former city manager Scott Stevens. The NAACP wanted him fired for not firing police chief Mike West simply because West posted the phrase “Making Goldsboro PD Great Again” on facebook which the NAACP claims was offensive. They should be careful else they’ll stir all that up again. I think the country has had enough of the bullies attacking people just because they expressed support for the President.

  11. As a (white) resident of Mr. Williams’ district, let me say this, we never had issues of honesty, integrity or character with Mr. Williams’ predecessor, Michael Headen. In all his years of service, I don’t recall Mr. Headen (also a black man) ever having done anything to bring discredit to either him or to his position as a council member. We didn’t always agree with him on every issue but we never had to question whether he was working to improve things for the citizens of Goldsboro as opposed to working to “line his own pockets”. I agree with Little Old Lady, I too think that there was something “fishy” about that election. Can’t wait for the next election and am hoping & praying that the voters in this district have had enough of this man’s antics.

      • You’ll note that I stated, “We didn’t always agree with him (Mr. Headen) on every issue” and I’ll state again, “we never had to question his integrity”.
Mr. Williams has an apparent issue with honesty and integrity dating back to the fiasco with him having the NY driver’s license, (his NC license had been suspended) when he was clearly a NC resident and was trying to throw his council position around as weight when stopped by a deputy. He tried to get the deputy in trouble and tried to get the Sheriff to “take care of the ticket”. Then he failed to show up in court (and blamed the Sheriff) instead of handling it like an honest person would have. As he stated, “it’s just a traffic infraction, not a major crime”. So why didn’t he deal with it like any honest person would do and go to court and pay his fine? My family members & I have all had tickets and we’ve gone to court and paid our fines. It’s no big deal. There were issues with him having failed to repay his friend’s mother for her loan to him to buy the building that his business is in, his failure to pay his property taxes for that building for years, along with the controversy over his failure to be honest about whether he lived in his district. All of this has been reported and is public record. I wonder about the things that he’s managed to sweep under the rug. We’re not questioning his actions because he is a black man, we question him because he apparently is not an honest man. It seems that he’s always making any issue that comes up (as a result of his own actions) a race issue rather than being man enough to stand up in his own defense. First he called in the Southern Justice League and now the NAACP to fight his battles for him. And we’re supposed to trust him to make decisions for our city?

THAT kind of “fishy”? That man lost his position for basically the same thing that Williams has done to Ms. Simpson-Carter.

  15. So what about the fact that it was a BLACK WOMAN that initially made the accusations against him? It must be really hard to “play the race card” when your accuser is black as well. Does Ms. Simpson-Carter not deserve the same considerations as this man? Maybe it should come down to a question of integrity and moral character. (Oh wait, never mind, he’s previously proven that he has neither.) Sounds to me like the councilman is pulling strings, snowing over the well intentioned folks at the NAACP just as he did the voters in his district. I’ve always had questions about that election and his behavior since has done nothing but fuel my doubts. I would hope that the NAACP leaders study the facts relating to all of his past actions and realize that he may not be the best example to defend as a representative of the black community. Again, not everything is about race but more often about honesty, integrity and personal responsibilities something that this man has repeatedly proven that he lacks.
