Suspect Accused Of Stealing Lottery Tickets

In May, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office began receiving reports of larcenies of lottery tickets occurring at different convenience stores in the eastern area of the county. By May 22nd, four convenience stores filed reports of a white male driving a silver Ford Focus coming into the stores asking for lottery tickets. When the store employee would lay the tickets on the counter, the suspect would then ask for another item such as chewing tobacco. Once the store employee would turn their back on the suspect to get the additional item, the suspect would grab the tickets off of the counter and leave the store. Later on May 22nd, the suspect was spotted at a convenience store in the Dudley area.  The individual was stopped for a traffic violation.  The investigation continued and later revealed 39-year-old Gary R. Betz of Goldsboro was involved in the larcenies.  Betz allegedly cashed in the stolen lottery tickets at other convenience stores.  He’s charged with Obtaining Property by False Pretenses and four counts of Misdemeanor Larceny.  Betz’s bond was set at $3,500 secured.
