BREAKING: Williams Narrowly Avoids Censure (PHOTO GALLERY)

Antonio Williams

A Goldsboro City Council member will not be censured.

Monday morning’s censure hearing for District 1 Councilman Antonio Williams included a boisterous audience, a police presence, and claims of a kangaroo court.  Williams attorney Mario White even went as far as to call the entire process “a high-tech lynching.”

The council had voted to censure Williams due to his alleged behavior toward Goldsboro Community Relations Director Shycole Simpson-Carter.  There were concerns that if the council did not take action against Williams, the city would be susceptible to a lawsuit for failing to protect an employee.

The lone witness for the city was Valarie Bateman, who helped compose the investigative report into Williams’ alleged behavior, while Williams and his attorney called several witnesses including all other city council members.

The Goldsboro City Council would have needed five votes to censure Williams.  However, the final vote was 4-3, meaning the motion to censure Councilman Williams failed.

Following the hearing, Williams told Goldsboro Daily News his vindication was a long time coming.  Williams also says he was troubled several witnesses — including his accuser — failed to appear for the hearing.

Two members of the public were escorted out of the proceedings by police.

I find it interesting that several weeks ago we were advised by “Blah Blah Blah,” (obviously a supporter of Mr. Williams) to “buckle up” because (it was implied that) the NAACP was going try to take over in the upcoming elections by putting select candidates in the Mayoral and Council race. If you look at the folks who have listed to run for Mayor & Council, you’ll see that those listing for those positions do indeed appear to fulfill that agenda….with the exception of Mr. Williams’ district. They apparently have not set an NAACP backed candidate up to run against him, therefore giving him the benefit of the majority black vote. I advise every voter to get to know who the candidates are and what (if any) their agenda is. Goldsboro residents need government officials who are above reproach and work towards the betterment of our city for all of it’s residents. Don’t think that situations like this go unnoticed by the Powers That Be when it comes to SJAFB. There’s already a lot of negativity swirling about Goldsboro in the military communities. Keep this mess up and we could be in jeopardy of losing our base.

So now it appears that Councilman Stevens is resigning from the Council partially due to his believing that the “last 4 years has put a toll on me” and his being unhappy with the way things are run in the City. The Council position is NOT A JOB, it is an elected position that he put himself in the running for. It was totally voluntary on his part so no one was making him accept the position, nor stay. It was his responsibility as a Council member to work to the betterment of the City and all of it’s citizens. If he can’t handle that, then good riddance.

OK, found it on another news source that “Williams, Foster and Stevens voted against censure”. WHAT THE HECK! Shouldn’t Williams have been recused from a vote that he was the subject of? Allowing him to vote was pure stupidity. That’s like allowing a criminal to be on his own jury.

Trump was allowed to vote for himself.

Why didn’t this woman show up. Councilman Williams has the right to face his accuser!
This “Mayor” and his good old boys have been riding Mr. Williams since he opened his business. First, it was because of the wooden enclosure that he put up, then it was the colors he had painted the front, and it has continued EVER SINCE!

I have watched the meetings online and it has gotten worse in the past year. I really hope we can get people in the city offices that have some common sense, because we sure don’t have that now.

Mr. Williams has ‘faced his accuser” in numerous previous meetings. It was not mandatory that Ms. Simpson-Carter be at that meeting because the outcome of those previous meetings had already established the situation and the necessitated this particular hearing. If it appears that the “Mayor” and his good old boys have been riding Mr. Williams” you may need to recognize that even as a Council member, Mr. Williams is obligated to abide by the same rules and laws as the rest of us. He has chosen repeatedly to try to bypass those rules and laws either due to his position on the council or just due to the fact that he’s not an honest person.

Total BS. No wonder Scott Stevens left. Williams has no business being on the city council and Foster has done nothing but enable Williams’ antics and wage his petty war with Chuck Allen. There are serious problems in the city that need addressed, but because of these two clowns, they keep getting pushed aside.

I’m hardly a member of the Chuck Allen fan club, but I really hope gets re-elected in November and not Foster.

Delta, there are indeed problems with the city council, but that problem sits in the mayor’s chair. He is beyond crass, crude and honest.

Way to go Council….you had one job and failed miserably. I can think of one, but would love to know who the other 2 members are that voted “no”. GDN, please make that info public….elections are coming up. I hope Ms. Simpson-Carter sues the heck out of all of them.

Anonymous, she doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Antonio Williams should sue her for defamation.

Or maybe we should call him Donald, since he only panders to the worst of his base and no one will hold him responsible for his bad behavior.

Yep.. got himself a ‘fixer’ much like Donald constantly does to shield himself from any consequences from his own illegal or unethical conduct & actions. Too bad Donald’s ‘fixers’ have been going to prison for protecting Cadet Bone Spurs aka Donald…

His (Williams’) “fixer” as you’ve put it, is that he’s constantly “playing the race card”. First using the Southern Justice folks and this time, the NAACP to fight his battles that did not even involve race as an issue. (Ms. Simpson-Carter is also African-American.) If you look closely at his history, it ‘s never been about his race, it’s always been about his character or rather, lack of character. There are good, decent people of ALL races out there. It’s time to elect our government officials based on honesty, integrity and character, regardless of race. Our former mayor, Al King was a black man, but first and foremost, he was a man of character. For over a decade he lead our City and worked with the City Council to improve Goldsboro for ALL citizens. I don’t recall him ever having “played the race card”.

I don’t see any of the above comments saying that Donald Trump is responsible for the local situation. It appears the posters simply make a comparison of two politicians behaving badly. Maybe read it again.
