WCPS Modifies School Start & Closing Times

This Monday, the Wayne County Board of Education in a 5-2 vote modified the schedule for school opening and closing times for the 2019-2020 school year. While modifications varied, nearly all schools experienced some degree of change. In most cases, times for elementary and middle schools switched in order to allow elementary schools to start their academic day first.

“Student safety is a top priority for the Board,” states Michael Dunsmore, superintendent. “Much of the Board’s discussion in making these changes focused on how best to help ensure parents and guardians of our youngest students can safely see their child off to school before heading to work. These changes were especially important to Board members who had concerns about situations where elementary age students may be left home alone and unattended at bus stops due to family schedules and later opening times.”

In addition to switching school opening and closing times, Grantham Elementary and Grantham Middle will return to having shared buses. This modification will reflect how the buses operated prior to Grantham Middle opening in 2015 and when the two schools operated as a single K-8 school.
