Councilman Questions City Email Protocol

Antonio Williams

A Goldsboro City Council member is unhappy with how a personal email from a constituent was circulated throughout the city offices.

District 1 Councilman Antonio Williams explained the situation to the council last week.

Williams says the confidential email was sent to his city council account, but was then circulated by a clerk to the city manager and mayor.

Council member Williams says there were issues in the email that could have caused harm to the individual.

Williams asked to establish a protocol for the council members’ emails.

City Manager Tim Salmon went through the rules regarding the council members’ email accounts.

The city manager says the clerks brought it to his attention because the email had to do with “life in jeopardy and abuse of family members.”

Salmon also stated the city council could change the procedure for having emails sent directly to council members, although emails with certain information – in this case regarding a perceived life-or-death situation – may still be disseminated at the city clerk’s discretion.

When there is a life in danger it is probably better to call the police rather than email a council member.
