Joan Marie Roberts Latta

August 14, 73, Pikeville

Joan Marie Roberts Latta, 73, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2019. Joan was born March 27, 1946 in Lenoir County to the late James Allen Roberts, Sr. and Dorothy Alice Mercer Roberts.

Very independent and a fighter, Joan conquered the challenges of life with a fierce tenacity. She liked things her way and you never had to wonder where she stood on issues. She was direct, straight-forward and if you were part of her inner circle, she had no boundaries on what she was willing to do for you.

Her childhood instilled the values of hard-work and determination that became the driving forces in her journey through life. Joan never met a challenge she wasn’t willing to tackle. Her quick-wit, loyalty and generosity were endearing qualities to her family and closest friends.

Always on the go and never idle, Joan gave work and fun her best effort. She retired from Lenoir Memorial Hospital where she worked as an executive assistant with over 30 years of dedicated service.

Joan’s family has fond memories of her culinary talents. She was truly ahead of her time and was always looking to broaden her horizons in the kitchen. Her flair in the kitchen made for the perfect family get together. Her pimento cheese, lasagna and pumpkin rolls were second to no one’s.

When at home, Joan loved to be curled up with a good book. Joan was all about winning. Alongside with her son, Joan loved to pull for the New England Patriots. If it was tennis, Roger Federer had no bigger fan than Joan.

We rejoice in our good memories and take comfort in knowing she’ll always live in our hearts.

A service to celebrate and remember Joan’s life will be held Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park. Family and friends will be received during the hour before the service.

Joan is survived by her son, Josh Duke; sister, Rose Roberts Foyles; brother, James Allen Roberts, Jr; and a special cousin, Wesley Sutton and wife, Vivian; and a special niece, Kim Speight. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, James Arthur Latta; and a sister, Mary Hope Roberts Pharand.
