County Working On Overnight Medical Transport Agreement

Wayne County takes the first official step toward hiring an overnight ambulance service.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners gave approval to the first reading of the franchise agreement for non-emergency overnight medical transport with North State Transport.

Dave Cuddeback, Wayne County’s EMS Director, says the agreement would have North State Transport providing the service from 6 PM until 6 AM Monday through Saturday and all day on Sundays.

Wayne County Manager Craig Honeycutt says the agreement has been reviewed by the county’s attorneys and North State Transport. However, Wayne UNC Health Care had not given any comment on the proposed EMS transport agreement.

Currently, overnight non-emergency medical transportation is provided by Wayne County’s EMS crews, and they can be strained between the emergency and non-emergency calls.

The commissioners will be asked to give final approval to the agreement with North State Transport at the next county board meeting.
