Two Airlifted To Hospital Following Morning Crash

Wayne County EMS stations 3 and 4 were dispatched to the scene of a head-on collision on U.S. 13 South between Sandhill Drive and Durham Lake Road Wednesday morning. The Mar-Mac, Grantham and Thoroughfare fire departments also responded to help free the drivers pinned inside both vehicles.  Firefighters used their tools to cut both victims free from the tangled wreckage.  It took nearly 30 minutes to free both drivers.  The Dudley Fire Department was called in to set up a landing zone at the Wayne County Fairgrounds for a medevac helicopter to transport both drivers to the hospital.  Thoroughfare firefighters set up traffic control around the crash site.  The accident is under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
