Arts Council Offers Christmas Cash For Gingerbread Creations

The Arts Council of Wayne County welcomes the return of its Gingerbread House Contest and Exhibit this December, and participants will compete for cash prizes totaling more than $500!

“We’re excited to bring back this popular holiday tradition,” said Georgia Dees, Arts Council Executive Director. “It’s a fun, creative way to get into the Christmas spirit, whether individually, or with family, friends or a team of co-workers! The possibilities for the design and decoration are limited only by your imagination!”

RE/MAX Complete is the sponsor of the Gingerbread House competition this year.

All entries will be on display in the Arts Council’s T.A. Loving Gallery from Dec. 6 until Dec. 19. Judging will occur Dec. 6, and winners will be announced during the First Friday exhibit openings that evening.

The four categories and prizes available are:

  1. Ages 6-10 (adult supervision allowed) – 1st – $50, 2nd – $40, 3rd – $30
  2. Ages 11-17 – 1st – $75, 2nd – $50, 3rd – $40
  3. Ages 18 and up – 1st – $150, 2nd – $75, 3rd – $50
  4. Professional (No prizes will be awarded in this category. See Guideline No. 7)

Entries will be accepted Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The entry fee is $20.

The Arts Council will host two Gingerbread House workshops prior to the competition. These will be Nov. 30 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. and Dec. 4 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The workshop fee is $25 per house and covers entry into the competition. You do not have to participate in a workshop to enter the contest.

  1. An entry does not have to be a house! It can be a barn, church, castle, local landmark, car, train or other type of structure.
  2. The walls of the structure must be made of gingerbread.
  3. The structure must be on a sturdy base, not made of gingerbread.
  4. Everything in the scene must be edible.
  5. Adult entries must be original creations and cannot be made from store-bought kits.
  6. Children may use kits, but no pre-constructed gingerbread houses.
  7. Professionals: We welcome entries from professional bakers and cake decorators. While prizes will not be awarded in this category, it will give professionals an opportunity to display their work and business information for promotional purposes. (A professional is defined as any person who is employed as a culinary professional, including chefs, bakers, pastry chefs or individuals who bake and/or decorate cakes for sale.)
  8. Teams are welcome to enter the competition. The team’s award category will be based on the age of the oldest member of the team.
  9. Houses may be for sale, but are not required to be. The ACWC retains 35% of all sales.
