For the third time this year, Wayne County is working to fill a vacancy on the Board of Commissioners.
District 1 Commissioner E. Ray Mayo passed away earlier this month creating the opening on the Wayne County Board.
This week, The Wayne County Board of Commissioners approved the schedule and process for filling Mayo’s seat.

Wayne County Manager Craig Honeycutt went through the timeline for filling Mayo’s seat:
- The deadline to submit the required materials will be October 30
- The Board of Commissioners will interview candidates on November 10
- The Board of Commissioners will select the next District 1 Commissioner on November 17
Carol Bowden, the Clerk to the Board of Commissioners, says there is no actual application to fill the District 1 seat.
Rather, those interested in filling the District 1 vacancy should visit the Wayne County Government website, Waynegov.com, to submit a cover letter and resume.
This is the same process used by the board earlier this year to fill the vacancies created by the sudden deaths of Commissioners John Bell and Joe Gurley.
