Shelby Jean Barber McGalliard, age 84 passed from this life to her eternal rest, surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Shelby was born on May 17, 1936, in Mt. Airy North Carolina to the late William “Bill” Augustus and Pearl “Irene” Barber. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Wade L. McGalliard from Valdese, NC.
Shelby was the first of seven children born to Bill and Irene. They often referred to themselves as the “gang”. She was a teen city girl of Mt. Airy, NC until her parents bought a farm in Jacksonville, NC where she and her siblings learned the farm life. It was in Jacksonville, at Bible Baptist Church, she met Wade, who was serving as a US Marine, stationed at Camp Lejune. Shelby dearly loved her family and was very active in her church. She shared the love and salvation of Jesus Christ with her family and others. She loved to sing in the choir and taught Sunday School and Children’s Church while living in Charlotte.
Shelby is survived by her five children: Brenda Anderson and husband Tom of Goldsboro, NC; Charles McGalliard and wife Phyllis of Davidson, NC; Mike McGalliard and wife Jeannie of White Springs, Florida; Dean McGalliard and wife Susie of Seaford, VA and Lisa Johnson and husband Gerald of Pikeville, NC. Shelby has eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are; Judy McElmurry; Phyllis Posik and Nicky Barber and wife Debbie; along with sister-in-laws Sara Barber, Lena Barber; and Debbie Tulley. Also, there are many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends, all of whom she loved and will miss her very much.
In addition to her late husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Larry D. Barber, Phillip M. Barber and Jerry V. Barber.
A graveside service will be held at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley, NC (near Goldsboro) at 2:00pm on Sunday; December 27, 2020. Shelby will lie in state at Seymour Funeral Home on Saturday, December 26, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, December 27, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon for those that wish to pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Shelby’s memory to Rosewood First Baptist Church, 562 NC 581 South, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
