January 28, 2021, 89, Pikeville –

Ellen Jernigan Gooding, 89, of Pikeville went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday evening, January 28, 2021 at home surrounded by her family.

Due to Covid-19, a private family graveside service will be held at Stantonsburg Cemetery. The family requests no visitation at the home due to the current national pandemic we are in.

She was born in Wayne County on August 16, 1931 to the late Troy and Rebecca Evans Jernigan. She was a faithful member of Belfast Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served as past choir director and Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by a son, Lavern Gooding and wife, Billie of Pikeville; two daughters, Joan Peele of Pikeville and Jan Sykes of Kenly; a goddaughter, Sharon Person (Harold) of Pikeville; one sister, Peggy Hyatt of Goldsboro; five grandchildren, Marie, Billy (Jennifer), Myra (Lance), Todd and Willis (Christy) and eight great- grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Gooding and her siblings.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
