The Goldsboro City Council selects its newest member.
Monday evening, the council voted 4 – 2 and selected Hiawatha Jones to be the next representative for District 1.
The Goldsboro City Council chose Jones over fellow candidate Yvonnia Moore.
Council member Brandi Matthews voiced her support for Moore and referenced a District 1 petition that also was in favor of appointing Moore to the open council seat.
Matthews also admonished the council for disregarding the will of the residents.
Councilman Bill Broadaway took exception to Matthews’ comments at the end of the meeting.
A third candidate, Washea Lancaster, had already withdrawn her application.
The District 1 vacancy was created when Antonio Williams stepped down from the Goldsboro City Council after he was elected to the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.
