March 11, 2021, 90, Mount Olive –
Mrs. Mary Jane Strickland Herring, long time resident of Mount Olive, passed away Thursday morning, March 11, 2021 at Lenoir Assisted Living Center in Pink Hill. She was 90 years of age.
Mrs. Herring will be best remembered for her long tenure of service as sales clerk with the old Rose’s “Five and Dime Store” downtown Mount Olive. After its closure, she was employed with Young Squire Industries and Pope’s Variety Store. She was a member of the Mount Olive Church of God.
Surviving family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie H. and Phil Howell of Mount Olive; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Rick” and Lynn K. Herring of Calypso; eight grandchildren, Christina Santiago, Tammy Williams, Lee Herring, Sara Herring, Mary Ashton Bowling, Jessica Davis, Phil Howell III, and Paige Harris; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Ann Porter of Farmville; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor “Vic” Herring; two sons, Eddie Herring and Mark Herring; her parents, Offie Strickland and Susan Phillips Strickland; brothers, George Strickland and Milford Strickland; and sisters, Shirley Ballreee, Mildred Watts, Mae Medford, Virginia Crimm, Eunice Daniels, Dorothy Stone, and Grace Stone.
Mrs. Herring good and Godly life will be remembered on Saturday, March 13, in a graveside service to be held at 3:00 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. Nephew, the Rev. George Strickland, will preside. Following the service, the family will greet friends and relatives at the burial site.
