Men’s Soccer: UMO Falls 2-1 to Catawba In Season-Opener

Salisbury – The University of Mount Olive Trojans fell 2-1 to the Indians of Catawba College on the road in Salisbury, NC. The contest was the season opener for UMO.

INSIDE THE SCORE

The opening half was a stalemate as neither team found the back of the net, with Catawba out shooting UMO 7-to-4.

The second half saw a bit of a spark as the Trojans’ Alfie Pope found Roberto Hernandez for the opening goal in the 58th minute.

Catawba found the answer in the 66th minute following a deflected shot from the Indians and the game was tied.

The ensuing minutes proved to once again be a stalemate as it seemed neither squad was going to be able to break the tie. The game ended in a bit of an odd category as an own goal by Mount Olive with 15 seconds left gave Catawba the 2-1 advantage. The Trojans were unable to force the equalizer and fell by the 2-1 final.

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
The Trojans were led by Hernandez with the lone goal for UMO and Pope as well with the sole assist in the game.

CATAWBA LEADERS
The Indians were led by Christian Dibb who took three shots and scored the only Catawba goal of the match.

KEY MOMENT
The determining factor in the match was the own goal with seconds reaming that sealed the Trojan fate.
