It was in the early evening hours on Friday, November 12, 2021 that Sherwood Holmes passed away. Death came for him while he was being cared for at Vidant Duplin Hospital A resident of the Mount Olive area for most of his life, Sherwood was 67.
Sherwood will be remembered as being a simple man whose life work was that of farming and welding. Nothing pleased him more than being atop a tractor tending the land from which he enjoyed growing crops, a garden, flowers, and such.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Summerlin Bell Holmes; his parents, Drifty and Minnie Lee Arnett Holmes; two sisters, Patricia H. Bowden and Wanda H. Davis; and three brothers, Wayne Holmes, Randy Holmes, and Hoyt Lee Holmes.
Surviving family members include his daughter, Cheryl Lee Albritton, her husband, Michael, and grandchildren, Paula Brady and Frankie Brady and wife, Katie, and great grandchildren, Kaylee Asberry, Kaydin Brady, Kynley Prayer, Kamdyn and Kyasac Latimore, Elijah and Cali Brady; all of Georgia; step-children who called him Pa Wood, Bobbie Jean Kornegay of La Grange, Denny Bell and wife, Jamie, of Mount Olive, and Jimmy Bell and wife, Wanda, of Kenansville; step-grandchildren, John Robert Overton and wife, Cassie, Pamela Oles and husband, Chris, Jamison Bell, Dexter Bell, and Travis Bell; and five siblings and their spouses, Milton “Buddy” and Phyllis Holmes, Katherine H. Craft, Raeford and Sharon Holmes, Pamela H. and Douglas Swinson, and Joey and Crystal Holmes, all of Mount Olive. There are also several nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Sherwood dearly.
The family will be receiving friends at Tyndall Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 16, beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m., at which the Rev. Ashley Summerlin will officiate. Burial will conclude the service at the Pate Cemetery. Friends and relatives are also being received at the home at which Sherwood and Joan shared.
