Meadow Lane Elementary second grade student, Jaelynn Sutherland, was recently named a winner in the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services 2022-23 “NC Farm to School” calendar art contest. She was recognized Monday evening by the Wayne County Board of Education for this achievement.
The calendar art contest was open to all North Carolina public school students in grades kindergarten through grades five. Miss Sutherland’s entry was among over 4,200 entries that were submitted. Entries were separated based on the student’s grade level and judged separately by grade until the final round of judging.
The NC Farm to School art contest encourages public school students in grades Kindergarten through fifth to create artwork showcasing North Carolina agriculture. Each year winners are chosen, and their artwork is featured in the NC Farm to School Calendar.
As an art contest winner, Miss Sutherland will have her artwork posted in the calendar’s centerfold next to the other winners. Her artwork will be profiled on the June 2023 calendar page. Winners and their teachers also received a gift card from the North Carolina Farm to School Cooperative, which were awarded at a winner’s reception last month at the Got to Be NC Festival in Raleigh.
The contest is coordinated by NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services with support from the NC Farm to School Cooperative and the School Nutrition Association of NC. It is worth noting Miss Sutherland was a finalist in last year’s calendar contest.
In addition to a small number of copies being provided to school districts, calendars will be available for download on the NC Farm to School website, www.ncfarmtoschool.com.
