Update – Monday, February 13th
Firefighters remain on the scene of the industrial fire in the Dudley area. There are still areas of the site burning and smoking, which is estimated to continue for the next few days. At this time, the fire remains contained, and there is no worry about the fire spreading. Units will remain on site over the next several days to monitor the fire and be able to respond to any issues. Incident command has demobilized from the scene in Dudley after being on site since Saturday morning, and all roads have reopened.
The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation team, North Carolina Forest Service, NC State Bureau of Investigation, and North Carolina Department of Insurance will investigate the incident to determine the cause when it is safe to do so.
11 PM Update February 12th
Fire personnel remain on the scene in Dudley and have contained the fire to the original site. There are no injuries to report, and the earlier announced road closures remain in effect around the incident site. Firefighters will continue working throughout the night to keep the fire contained and monitor spots on the site that are still burning. Rain is expected overnight which should assist with firefighting efforts.
We have received assistance from out-of-county agencies to relieve our local departments overnight. Those agencies include Township 7 Fire, Township 6 Fire, Tri-Community Fire, Hugo Fire, City of Kinston, Sandy Bottom Fire, Deep Run Fire, North Lenoir Fire, Arapahoe Fire, Olympia Fire, Reelsboro Fire, Meadow Fire, Corinth-Holders Fire, Kenly Fire, Brogden Fire, Four Oaks Fire, Warsaw Fire, Wallace Fire, Potters Hill Fire, Pin Hook Fire, Albertson Fire, and the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshall.
8 AM Update Sunday, February 12th
Fire personnel remain on the scene in Dudley and have made progress overnight in extinguishing the fire. Rain throughout the evening and this morning have assisted the firefighting efforts. There are still no injuries to report. Genoa road has reopened, but Old Mount Olive Highway remains closed around the incident site.
Incident command released all out-of-county teams this morning, and we greatly appreciate their assistance overnight to allow our local responders time off. The North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshall remains on the scene to coordinate any resources needed from out-of-county agencies.
The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation team, North Carolina Forest Service, NC State Bureau of Investigation, and North Carolina Department of Insurance will investigate the incident to determine the cause. We appreciate the ongoing support from the community, who have brought supplies for our first responders as they work continuously on the scene. The American Red Cross remains on scene to coordinate these donations and assist with keeping our teams taken care of.
Update:
First responders remain on the scene at the National Salvage and Service Corp. facility off Old Mount Olive Highway in Dudley. Due to the nature of the fuel load, operations are currently in a defensive status. Firefighters are working to protect exposures and surrounding property. There are still no injuries to report at this time, and the cause of the fire remains unknown. Old Mount Olive Highway and a portion of Genoa Road between US-117 and Old Mount Olive Highway remain closed, and motorists are urged to plan accordingly.
Over 100 personnel from the following agencies are on site assisting with this operation: Mar-Mac VFD, Arrington VFD, Belfast VFD, Elroy VFD, Fremont VFD, Little River VFD, Goldsboro Fire Department, Jordans Chapel VFD, Mount Olive Fire Department, Nahunta VFD, New Hope VFD, Oakland VFD, Patetown VFD, Pikeville VFD, Pricetown VFD, Rosewood VFD, Saulston VFD, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Fire Department, Seven Springs VFD, Thoroughfare VFD, Calypso VFD, Faison VFD, NC Forest Service Aviation, Wayne County EMS, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, NCDOT, American Red Cross, and the Wayne County Office of Emergency Services.
We want to thank the many individuals and organizations who have brought supplies for our first responders who have been on the scene since early this morning. Many of today’s responders are volunteers, and the outpouring of support for those responding has been incredible.
Previous Story:
Wayne County 911 received a call at 1:27 a.m. regarding a large fire at National Salvage and Service Corp, 430 Old Mt Olive Hwy, Dudley, NC 28333. This site is a large industrial facility that houses railroad ties. A passerby saw the fire and told dispatchers the flames were three stories high.
Currently, there are 17 fire departments on the scene, including Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Goldsboro Fire Department, and numerous volunteer departments. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Wayne County EMS, NC State Highway Patrol, NC Department of Transportation, and Red Cross are on the scene assisting with the response. Duke Energy and Tri-County Electric have responded to shut off power to the facility, and all surrounding water districts were notified due to increased water needs for firefighting efforts. Notice was provided to CSX to re-route trains during the response.
Investigators will be on the scene to determine the cause of the fire, but there is no cause known at this time. There are no injuries to report at this time, and no evacuations have taken place in the area. Residents are asked to seek alternate routes as Old Mount Olive Highway is closed at this time.
