Rev. George H. Futrelle

Rev. George H. Futrelle

May 25, 2023, 61, Mount Olive –

Rev. George H. Futrelle, 61, joined the saints in Heaven proclaiming praise to our Lord on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

George was a man of many passions. First and foremost was his love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the desire to share that love with all he met. George was ordained in the Original Free Will Baptist denomination in 2009. For the past 14 years, he has proclaimed the Gospel at the churches he pastored and many revival services in various churches in our area. George’s first pastorate was at Daly’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Seven Springs. He continued his calling as pastor of Walnut Creek Original Free Will Baptist Church in La Grange where he was currently serving. Prior to becoming a pastor, George was a proud and active Gideon and served as a church deacon.

George’s next greatest passion was his family. His love for each one of them was as unique as they were. A dedicated husband to Renee, a devoted daddy to Samantha and Meredith, a beloved son to Sally; and a loyal brother to Greg and Joy, George found profound happiness in the blessing of the family he had received.

George was a lifelong aviation enthusiast, a passion he inherited from his father. This led to his employment with the Duplin County Airport beginning in 1989. Over the last 34 years, George saw many changes and improvements at the Duplin Airport, all the while as he worked his way through the ranks to become the Airport Director. He was a former president and served on the board of directors of the North Carolina Airport Association. George was also a member of the Mount Olive Airport Commission.

George was currently serving as the Assistant County Manager in Duplin County. He was very active with the University of Mount Olive, serving in many facets including being a member of the Board of Trustees.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Kornegay Arena at the University of Mount Olive. A service to celebrate George’s life of service to God and his fellow man will follow the visitation, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kornegay Arena with his brothers in Christ, Rev. Frank Purvis, and Rev. Barry Stallings officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the Pikeville Cemetery.

George is survived by his wife of 38 years, Renee P. Futrelle; daughters, Samantha Futrelle Lee and husband, Brandon of Mount Olive and Meredith Futrelle of Mount Olive; mother, Sally Perry Futrelle Gillis of Boone; brother, Greg Futrelle of Boone; sister, Joy F. Ingallinera and husband, Carl of Wrightsville Beach; aunts, Doris P. Hampton of Athens, Georgia and Gail Perry of Banner Elk; and other extended family members.

George was preceded in death by his father, Robert Howard Futrelle, and his step-father, Boyd Gillis.
