Search Underway for Escaped Orange Correctional Offender

Update:

An offender who escaped Monday from Orange Correctional Center was recaptured this morning.

A Prisons Emergency Response Team (PERT) took offender William Cooper (#0940349) into custody about 7:25 a.m. near Orange Grove Road in Hillsborough. Cooper, 36, will be charged with escape and moved to a higher-custody facility.
A female suspect has been arrested and charged in Orange County with aiding and abetting the escape. Investigations by the N.C. Department of Adult Correction and by outside law enforcement agencies continue.
Cooper was found missing from the minimum custody correctional facility around 6 a.m. Monday during the morning count. He was serving a three-year sentence on a larceny conviction in Alamance County and for probation revocation. He had been scheduled to be released Dec. 17, 2024.

State correctional and local law enforcement officers are seeking Orange Correctional Center offender William Cooper, who escaped from the minimum custody prison in Hillsborough on Monday morning.

Cooper was confirmed missing during a morning count of offenders around 6 a.m.

Cooper is a thin white male, age 46, who stands six foot tall, weighing around 200 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He is heavily tattooed, with a variety of symbols on his hands, arms, legs, shoulder, stomach, back, chest and neck.

He was serving a three-year sentence for a January larceny conviction in Alamance County and a probation revocation. He was scheduled to be released Dec. 17, 2024. An escape warrant is being prepared for this minimum custody offender.
