Mrs. Virginia Thornton Cosgrove, 83, resident of Mount Olive, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 25, 2023, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after the sudden onset of a serious illness.
Mrs. Cosgrove was a native of Faison. While the better part of her life had allowed her to be a homemaker, in earlier years she had been employed at various places including Hamilton Beach Industries, Burlington Industries, Lewis Drug Store, Friendly Mart, and Georgia-Pacific Corporation.
The family will have visitation on Friday, July 28, at Tyndall Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until 12 noon. Graveside rites will follow at 1 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeffery Scott McCumber and the Rev. Andrea McCumber. In lieu of flowers, it is the request of the family that donations be made to Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina (www.foodbankcenc.org/donate), or Kitty Askins Hospice Center (https://www.3hc.org/donate-now), or the charity of one’s choice.
Mrs. Cosgrove is survived by her sons and their spouses, Michael and Melissa McCumber of Pikeville, Jeff and Debbie McCumber of Rosewood, and Ashley McCumber and Craig DaVini of Raleigh; two sisters, Mildred T. Wilson of Indiana, and Betty T. Whaley of Chinquapin; grandchildren, the Rev. Jeffery Scott McCumber and wife, the Rev. Andrea McCumber, Zachary McCumber, and Victoria “Tori” Carol McCumber; a great-grandchild, Hollis McCumber; a step-grandson, Brayden Wells; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved doggie companion, “Chico.”
Loved ones preceding her in death include her husband, Michael William Cosgrove; her parents, Henry Felix Thornton and Clyde Horne Thornton; and siblings, Paul Haney, Percy Clayton Haney, Ellen Bearden, Eugene Thornton, Jerry Thornton, John Henry Thornton, Charlie Thornton, Lonnie Thornton, Norwood Thornton, Lela Ezzell, Emma Williams, and Evelyn Compton.
