Kristy Brown “Nana” Greene

Kristy Brown “Nana” Greene

August 27, 2023, 82, Pikeville —

Kristy Brown “Nana” Greene, 82, was reunited with the love of her life, her husband, Al on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Born in Whitinsville, Massachusetts on February 26, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Hubert John Brown, Sr. and Edna Helene Martin Brown Dresser.

Kristy didn’t know what she was getting into when she met the family that lived down the road from her when she was eleven. Growing up down the street from each other, Kristy and Al didn’t start dating until he joined the Marine Corps. When asked why she began writing letters to Al, she said it was just what she did back then. They fell in love and quickly started their life as a military couple. She always used to say, “Join the Marines and see the world” – but they kept getting stationed back in North Carolina. Soon after they married, their oldest daughter, Sherry was born. A year later, Denise joined the family while stationed in Chicago. Four years later, Karen was born when Al was deployed. The family was rounded out when their fourth daughter, Melissa was born.

During their 54-year marriage, Kristy not only played the part of a supportive wife but was a force to be reckoned with. She loved her daughters fiercely, but she loved her grandchildren even more. Kristy always said that if she knew grandkids were so much fun, she would’ve had them first. Tragedy and two blessings occurred in 1995, in May, Kristy and Al lost their daughter, Karen to cancer. Later that year in August and September, she gained the title of “Nana” as the first two of their five grandchildren, Matthew and Maddie were born. Mikaela came along almost three years later, Mason the next year, and Gracie rounded out the grandkids in 2002.

In January 2015, Kristy lost the love of her life, Al. Last year in 2022, she lost her oldest daughter and sidekick, Sherry.

Kris as she was affectionately known by her friends loved working in her garden, loving on her fur babies, and most of all, spending time with people. She touched everyone she met and always welcomed people into her home and life. Kris’s greatest joy was spending time with her five grandkids.

Kris will be remembered as a unique individual who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind but loved with all her heart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Ernest “Al” Greene; daughters, Karen Greene Donah and Sherry Mae Greene; siblings, Jayne Ann Dresser, Hubert John Brown, Jr., and Dorothy Mae Murray.

Kristy is survived by her daughters, Denise Meekins of Jacksonville and Melissa Vera and husband, Raul of Pikeville; her grandchildren, Matthew Meekins, Mason Leake, Madeline Vera-Colon (Katsuya), Mikaela Vera, and Graciela Vera; and several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Kristy’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2023, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Stovall officiating. Interment will follow at the Pikeville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at Seymour Funeral Home.
