Gary Verne Bevell, 84, lovingly known as Gary, was born on March 1, 1939, in Boydton, Virginia. He peacefully passed away in Goldsboro, North Carolina, on Saturday, September 30, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Allen John Bevell and Gladys Ellen Hite Bevell, a son, John Manual Bevell as well as his brother, John D. Bevell, and sister, Jeanette B. Arnold. Their memories will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
Gary’s journey began in Boydton, where he grew up attending Boydton Baptist Church and receiving his education at Boydton Elementary School. He was in the second graduating class of Bluestone High School class of 1957. After graduation, he lived in Chase City, VA, and Selma, NC before eventually settling in Goldsboro, NC, where he found his permanent home.
Gary was the proud owner and operator of Wayne Auto Salvage for over 50 years, Bevell Pull it Yourself Used Auto Parts, EZ Bait & Tackle, and well as co-founder of ReNu Life. He was a former Boy Scout Leader as well as a Mason. Throughout his career, he displayed an unwavering commitment to his work and earned the respect of his peers and customers alike.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife Pat Lavin Bevell, and his children Dale Bevell and wife Laura, Dwayne Bevell and wife Heather, and Lorenda B. Overman and husband Harrell, Tamara H. Toner, Tonia M. Harrison, and Amanda W. Ostrander and husband Steven He was a devoted father to his children, and is remembered fondly by his former wife, Rebecca N. Bevell. His siblings, Jewell B. Fields, and Glenda B. Smith, were a constant source of love and support throughout his life.
He was also blessed with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life: Beth O. Cauley and husband, Ivey, Betsy O. Roberson and husband, Ryan, Dave Overman and wife, Vennie, Ryan Bevell, Joshua Bevell, Jaden Bevell, Maddox Bevell, Nicolas Toner, Abigail Toner, Olivia Toner, James Toner, Camden Ostrander, Mazzy Ostrander, and Maxwell Ostrander. His great-grandchildren, Wade, Logan, John Rex, Brooks, Quinn, Adellynn, Josie, Davis, Lynne and Libby.
Gary’s memory will also live on in the hearts of so many friends and co-workers as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services to honor and celebrate Gary’s life will be held at St. Paul Methodist Church, where a memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, in the sanctuary. A reception will immediately follow the service in the fellowship hall where the family will receive friends. His cremains will be lovingly placed in the memorial garden at the church, a final resting place that symbolizes the peace he found in his faith.
Gary will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his dedication to his family, and his unwavering love. May his soul find eternal rest, and may his legacy continue to inspire all those who knew him.
