On Oct. 23 at approximately 5:26 p.m., officers with the Goldsboro Police Department and deputies with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in the 300 block of Myers Ave. When officers arrived on the scene, they made contact with David Smith.
Smith, 45, was in his vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Smith was transported to UNC Health Wayne for treatment. He has since been released. The Goldsboro Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau was contacted and responded to the scene.
As a result of the investigation, warrants were secured against Nelson Dewon Cannon, 41, on Nov. 3. Cannon was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied motor vehicle resulting in serious bodily injury, and two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied motor vehicle in motion.
On Nov. 3, at approximately 1:55 p.m., deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office arrested Cannon in Clayton. Cannon was taken to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office where he was served with his warrants.
Bond information for Cannon is still pending. This investigation is still ongoing and additional arrests are possible.
