Edith Doris Hollamon Jernigan

November 2, 2023, 87, Lumberton –

Edith Doris Hollamon Jernigan, 87, formerly of Goldsboro entered her eternal heavenly home in the early morning of November 2, 2023.  She had been a resident of Wesley Pines Retirement Community in Lumberton for a little more than two years.

Doris was born August 10, 1936, in Wayne County to the late Talmadge and Vilona Bordeaux Hollamon, along with her twin brother Horace.  The twins were the youngest of eight children.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Reynold Sherrel Jernigan, and by all seven of her siblings.

She grew up on her parent’s farm in the Grantham Community and became a military wife in the early 1950s.  After working briefly with Lori Manufacturing, she was employed at the General Electric Welds plant in Goldsboro as an inspector for thirty years.  She retired in 1996 and spent the next three years as Sherrel’s caretaker until he passed away in May 1999.

She was an active lifelong member of Love Memorial Baptist Church where she worked in numerous ministries and served in many capacities. As in all areas of her life, she was a diligent worker and devoted her time and energies to serving God and others. She was a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer in the Mar-Mac community for 20 years. Her time was filled with cooking, providing for family, visiting her neighbors, and assisting others in many ways and without fanfare. Doris was also an active member since 1966 of the Order of Eastern Star, Newton Grove Chapter where she faithfully attended meetings and often served as an officer.

Doris is survived by one son, James Reynold Jernigan and wife Peggy, of Lumberton, one daughter, Loreice Jernigan and husband Jeff Walter of Wake Forest; two granddaughters, Wendy Leigh Fields and husband Daniel, and Lisa Carol McGirt and husband Ryan; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Fields, Dakota Ryan McGirt, and Caleb Bryan McGirt all of Lumberton. She is also survived by her sister-in-laws Dorothy Hollamon and Hilda Hollamon and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev Richard Toler will officiate a celebration of Doris’s life at Love Memorial Baptist Church on Saturday, November 11 at 11:00 AM with a graveside service at Wayne Memorial Park immediately following. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall beginning at 10:00 AM.  Services for the Jernigan family are being provided by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

In honor and remembrance of Doris, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to
