Luz Escalante Barta, 90, peacefully passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Colombia on January 27, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Alicia Botero Escalante.

In addition to her parents, Luz was preceded in death by her husband, Vaclav Barta; twin great-grandchildren, Clayton and Cohen Stern; and ten siblings.

Luz is survived by her daughters, Jane Stern and husband, Ken of Goldsboro and Patricia A. Barta of Pikeville; grandchildren, Kenny Stern, Billy Stern and wife, Meagan, Joseph Brown, and Kevin Brown; great-grandchildren, Kailyn Stern and Colton Stern; and sisters, Marta Palacio, Gloria Posada, and Alicia Mejia.

Family was paramount to Luz, she relished in time spent with her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were the light and driving force in her life.

Luz enjoyed working with her hands crafting beautiful quilts and cross-stitch items to share with her family. Many of those pieces adorn the homes of her daughters and grandchildren. Luz was a tomboy at heart, enjoying being outdoors hiking, and camping.

A graveside service to celebrate Luz’s life will be held in a private setting for the family at the Pikeville Cemetery.
