Henry Grey Gurganus

Henry Grey Gurganus, 75, of the Swansboro area, passed away Tuesday evening, December 5, 2023.

Mr. Gurganus, a native of Snow Hill, had served in the North Carolina National Guard as a young man.  He then spent the better part of his working life as owner/operator of several textile and sewing factories, perhaps the most notable being Rugged Sportswear.  He also operated outlets and boutique shops in which some of his merchandise was offered to the public.  In later years, he became a restaurateur, operating Ribeye’s Steakhouse at Cape Carteret.

A service in which to reflect upon his life will be Monday, December 11, at 3 p.m. at the Tyndall Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Olive, after which the family will receive relatives and friends.  Mr. Gurganus will be buried in Mount Olive in a private service.

He is survived by his son, Franklin Grey Gurganus, of Garner; a sister, Metta Betsy “Bet” Gurganus of  Swansboro; three brothers, Arthur Carroll “A.C.” Gurganus of Snow Hill, William Murphy Gurganus, Jr. and wife, Shirley, of Creedmoor, and Dave Gurganus of Snow Hill; a niece, Carla Gannis of New York; his former wife and a partner in business, Anacelia Cervantes of Swansboro, along with her son, Arturo  Sarrelangue of Greensboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Murphy Gurganus and Laura Inez Oakes Gurganus; and a brother, Kenneth Gurganus.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that Henry’s memory be reflected in memorials made to Habitat for Humanity Cape Carteret.
