Through the ISA, WCC has been approved to offer AI curriculum online to BCC students after they have completed their first-year general education classes. Students will complete 34 credit hours at each community college to earn an Associate in Applied Science – Artificial Intelligence Engineer degree.

The partnership between the two schools will begin in the fall of 2024. This will be WCC’s first ISA for its AI curriculum.

AI is a growing area of computer science that covers the theory and development of software applications that simulate thinking, draw inferences according to context, discover meaning, reach conclusions, and make decisions by using data.

WCC President Patty Pfeiffer said that the ISA will increase workforce availability in both Wayne and Brunswick counties and eastern North Carolina.

“Artificial intelligence has become something we all are using, even if we don’t realize it,” Pfeiffer said.

Pfeiffer added that AI professionals contribute to future advancements in healthcare, finance, technology, and more.

“These roles are pivotal for developing intelligent systems, algorithms, and applications that address the complex challenges and improve decision-making processes in our world,” said Pfeiffer.

BCC President Gene Smith is excited for his students to be able to explore more workforce opportunities through this collaboration.

“We look forward to promoting this program and providing students with these wonderful opportunities in new technology,” Smith said. “We’re so thankful to have this partnership with Wayne Community College.”

WCC was the first community college in the state, and the second in the nation, to offer an associate degree specializing in AI. Additionally, the College’s faculty wrote the course descriptions for AI courses that are now available to all 58 NC community colleges.
