March 8, 2024, 79, Goldsboro —
Dennis O’Neal Smith, 79, passed away on Friday evening, March 8, 2024, at ECU Medical Center in Greenville. Dennis was born in Wayne County to the late Leroy O’Neal Smith and Sally Blanche Carlyle Smith on August 30, 1944. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Kaye Vinson Smith; and sister, Ella Jean Smith.
Dennis served our country as a serviceman in the Army Reserves. Although he began his career as a mechanic with CL. Snipes Ford, Dennis knew that a life of farming was calling his name. His love for the land ran deep in his veins, and he never felt that he was working as long as he farmed, for he loved every minute of it. In addition to farming, he owned and operated an eighteen-wheeler and hauled for several local grain mills.
A man of many interests, he was passionate about racing. For many years he was a stock car driver. Animals recognized his love for them and they instantly gravitated to him. Getting down on their level and playing with them was always right up his alley. His demeanor with people was just as friendly, as he never met a stranger. Those he had just met would soon feel as if they had a lifelong friend. From striking up a great conversation to listening intently to those who surrounded him, Dennis made all feel comfortable in his presence.
In Dennis’s spare time, he looked forward to shooting pool or playing his hand of cards. Fishing brought great enjoyment as well.
A constant support to his family, Dennis took an interest in everything that his children and grandchildren were doing. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play various sports. Though he was outnumbered, having two daughters and four granddaughters, he was grateful to be at their mercy. He loved them each uniquely and dearly. Since the sudden death of his wife in November of 2023, his life had a void that was deep, for he missed his day-to-day life with her constantly.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Dennis’ life at 3:00 p.m. at the graveside in Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Cotton officiating.
Dennis is survived by his daughters, Joey Ryan and husband, David of Pikeville and Leigh Ann Sutton and husband, Chad of Seven Springs; granddaughters, Bailey Ryan, Camryn Ryan, Samantha Sutton and Megan Sutton; brother, Bobby R. Smith, and wife, Angie of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
