Tae Lewis’ reaction when finding out his journey on NBC’s “The Voice” wasn’t over told the whole story.
Lewis was the final contestant from team Dan + Shay selected to move on to the playoff round during Monday night’s episode of “The Voice.” Upon hearing his name called and learning that his time on the show would indeed continue, Lewis dropped to his knees partly in disbelief, and partly in relief.
“That was the craziest moment,” Lewis told Goldsborodailynews.com. “I fell to my knees because I was the last person being called. In my brain I was like, ‘I’m going home.’ And then when Shay called my name I literally to the floor because it was nothing but God really just covering me.”
During Monday night’s episode viewers witnessed Lewis sing Randy Houser’s “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight,” a song he often opens with when he performs live. While rehearsing the song in front of his coaches Dan + Shay, Lewis was encouraged to step out of his comfort zone and perform the song without his guitar to display more of his stage presence.
Minus his guitar, Lewis turned in perhaps his best performance to date during his time on “The Voice,” while exuding poise and confidence on stage. The result was every coach, John Legend, Dan + Shay, Chance the Rapper, and Reba McEntire standing to applaud after Lewis’ performance.
“(Dan + Shay) wanted me to put the guitar down because they wanted to see a different side of me,” Lewis said. ‘It was different but I’m super grateful for it. They helped me to understand a lot in regards to who I am as an artist and not trying to be like anybody else, but really just being me. (Getting a standing ovation) makes me feel amazing and just to see that they understand that I have the ability to want this, but I’m out here really trying to do this full-time. It just feels amazing to know that I have all those coaches who believe in what I do.”
Lewis will be back on television on May 6 when the playoffs begin on “The Voice.” He should learn within the next week which song he’ll perform and he remains confident in his own abilities and in the experience and tutelage of Dan + Shay.
“I know Dan + Shay they’re going to be picking the song for me,” Lewis said. “So, whatever song they pick for me I know they want to win, and them wanting to win they’re going to put their best foot forward and picking the best of the best song that’s going to fit me as an artist.”
