MOUNT OLIVE — Early on Sunday afternoon, firefighters from Mount Olive and Indian Springs were dispatched to the scene of a two-vehicle accident on Kelly Springs Road just off NC 55 East.
As fire and EMS personnel arrived on the scene they found a white vehicle sitting in the roadway and another vehicle flipped over onto its passenger side in a field. The female driver of a white car was pinned in her vehicle along with a child in the back seat.
EMS personnel quickly removed the child from the vehicle and transported them to the hospital, a second EMS unit was dispatched to the scene to assist the firefighters in the extraction of the driver.
After a period of time firefighters using their extraction tools managed to free the driver from her vehicle. She was later pronounced deceased while on the way to UNC Health Wayne.
A third EMS unit was called to the scene to transport both individuals inside the overturned vehicle to the hospital. Kelly Springs Road was closed to all traffic from NC 55 East to Jones Turner Road in Duplin County for several hours.
Several North Carolina State Highway Patrol officers arrived on the scene to investigate the accident.
