Three Wayne County Post 11 pitchers held Kinston Post 43 to three hits en route to a 4-0 shutout on Tuesday night at the C35 Sports Complex in the season opener for both teams.
Post 11 earned the victory in just an hour and 44 minutes.
Wayne County (1-0) starting pitcher Casey Culbreth allowed only two hits and three walks in four innings on the mound while stranding four Kinston base runners.
Post 43 would threaten in the fifth inning off Post 11 reliever Erik Rosas. Designated hitter Christian Coples doubled to left to lead off the inning and advanced to third with one out on the Braxton Byrd ground out back to Rosas. Rosas would get a strikeout and a ground out end the threat.
Wayne County would counter in their half of the fifth inning on a Drew Sweet single and a Baines Raynor double to put runners on second and third with no outs. But Post 43 starter Matthew Rhodes would work his way out of trouble to keep it scoreless.
In the home half of the sixth inning, William & Mary commit Davis Albert would bunt his way on with one out in the sixth inning.
Albert would then advance to third on the pick off attempt throwing error by Rhodes. Shortstop Jackson Hood would then single to right to make it 1-0 Post 11.
After Hood stole second base, Drew Sweet would deliver his second hit, a double down the left field line to increase Wayne County’s lead to 2-0.
After a Baines Raynor infield single to shortstop Kinston would go to the bullpen. Austin Clements would come in only to give up a ground ball hit to shortstop but a throwing error would allow Sweet and Raynor to score making it 4-0.
Wayne County closer Ayden West only needed 10 pitches to finish off Kinston in the seventh inning and earn the save.
Post 11 returns to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday Night versus Roanoke.
